Week 4: Persuasive Posters #oneperday2023

This week, we had to choose a environmental issue and develop a persuasive poster to help promote the cause. I selected the issue of endangered animals. I identified the 3 main causes of this issue, these were, litter pollution, road kills and, deforestation, in result of fires.

I selected the audience of Young adults (20-25 high SES).
Preliminary Iteration 1 -
This iteration represents the issue of endangered animals due to the cause of litter pollution. It was a large factor to the decline of turtles in our oceans. I decided to represent the turtle as the embodiment of the litter in the ocean, due to their know relationship to plastic bags and being consistently caught amongst rouge nets. In the background I was thinking of showing the "water" as brief lines horizontally across the page to lead the eye. I also decided to add a quick and simple sentence at the bottom right of the poster to guilt the audience member.

Preliminary Iteration 2 -
This iteration represents the issue of endangered animals due to the cause of road killing. After some quick research I found that koalas have only recently made the endangered list and one of the main reasons was because of reckless driving/road kills. I tried to keep the focus on the koalas in the foreground/middle ground as I wanted to tell a story with this persuasive iteration. I kept the background extremely blurred and distorted, trying to get in the perspective of a creature on the road. The lines from the road bring the eyes of the viewer to the front of the picture. I wanted this to be very emotive, and without many words for dramatic effect.

Preliminary Iteration 3 -
This iteration represents the issue of endangered animals due to the cause of deforestation in the terms of fires. I wanted to highlight that it is possible that throwing and using a cigarette outside your vehicle can have the possibility of causing a forest fire. I highlighted the possibility with using the idea of the wing mirror on a vehicle showing a forest fire behind the individual with the sentence "It's closer than it appears", to explain that it's more possible than you think. There's a lot for the eye to explore and discover in this iteration, such as the message in the smoke and so on.

Final Persuasive Poster Representation -
I selected the second preliminary poster idea to follow as I liked the emotive state it caused the viewer to feel. It was a strong persuasive contender. Due to the young community as the audience, they may not care to take time out of their day to view a poster, due to this I made it very emotive so it grabs and holds the attention of the user and could leave them thinking about the poster for the rest of the day creating interest, due to it's out there idea.
This poster idea builds desire within the viewers as it is extremely emotive and connects with the user. The bright colour of the blood grabs the attention of the viewer straight away.
I chose an analogous palette, other than the two bright colours to break up the darker colours. The bright red in the foreground grabs the attention of the viewer straight away, causing them to view the tragic scene in the picture then gradually exploring the rest of the scene, creating a relationship with the younger koala. The darker palette evokes strong emotions of grief and guilt.
The style of the car and trees were still kept distorted as they weren't the main object in this poster. Plus I wanted viewer to connect on a personal level on how the younger koala may view this situation.

Collage Representation of the Final Persuasive Poster-
I don't normally enjoy using the collage medium and I still didn't, but I decided to give it a shot anyway. I used images of nature to make up most of the image as the concept this week was environmental issues. I used solid colours to represent the car, koalas and other details. It created an interesting message behind the poster after using collage, but I am drawn more to the digital approach before.
